“The Polk County Sheriff’s Office does not look at Ms. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is working diligently to provide fair, equitable treatment for Taylor while providing a safe, secure environment during her pretrial detainment, McCarthy advised. Today Sheriff Bill McCarthy, Chief Tim Krum and Captain Cory Williams met with Donna Red Wing who is the executive director of One Iowa, a support advocate group for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community. If Illinois declines to extradite Taylor she will be released. Once that is completed, the State of Illinois will have 10 business days to pick up the defendant and transport her to a holding facility in Illinois to address the warrant. Taylor will be scheduled for a court hearing tomorrow, July 21, where she will have an opportunity to sign extradition paperwork. These services and privileges are not limited to, but include telephone access, video visitation, television, commissary, exercise, showers and immediate access to medical personnel. Protective Custody status is a voluntary request which keeps a detainee separate from the general population within PCJ, McCarthy explainede.ĭue to Taylor’s protective custody request, she was placed in the medical holding unit which grants her access to all services and privileges provided to every person in custody at the PCJ.
Taylor requested “protective custody” status upon being brought into the Polk County Jail. Taylor was brought into the Polk County Jail by the West Des Moines Police Department on July 13 on charges of possession of a prescription drug, malicious prosecution and a valid Illinois State warrant. There has been some miscommunication within the National and Local media of her classification and detention status which McCarthy said he would like to clarify. JSheriff Bill McCarthy, Chief Jailer Tim Krum and Captain Cory Williams are aware are actively addressing the concerns of the detention status of Meagan Taylor, whose legal name is Derez Flowers.
